It is a short rhyming picture book. I’m so amazed that it brings us through a hockey game from the first puck drop to the final buzzer with such limited words. The rhyming is smooth and perfect, like a sing-along song for bedtime. So it serves really perfect for bedtime story. It will bring calm and good dream to children, especially little sport lovers.

The illustrations are vibrant, engaging, full of actions and capturing the sport from various angles. All the details are very charming too. Parents can show their children all the stuff about the sport, older ones will also enjoy looking for and pointing out the items. It’s such a visual pleasure to read the book.

It’s a book perfect for early readers, and all hockey lovers.

Title: Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote: A Migrant’s Tale

Author:  Duncan Tonatiuh

Age Range: 6-9

This book tells a migrant’s tale, since myself being one, books on this topic always draw my attention. This picture book by Duncan Tonatiuh touches on the subject in a very courteous and gentle manner. It brings to light the hardship and struggles faced by thousands of families who seek to make better lives for themselves and their children by leaving their home. It even has plot of the rabbit and coyote illegally crossing the border. This can lead into an educational discussion (in class or between parents and children) about immigration, which can also open up children’s eyes to what is going on in this world.

Screen Shot 2018-02-01 at 7.51.20 PMThe flat illustration style is very unique, like paper-cut characters stick to the background, which gives it a hand-made craft feeling, a perfect choice for a culture book. The content includes many Mexican traditional food (such as tortillas, aguamiel), tools, traditions (like papel picado, which became famous from Movie Coco) children will learn a lot about the Mexican culture.

I believe this is a book every migrant and people who are interested at immigration life should read.

Project ongoing

Several more illustrations for the new book. 🙂

Besides the illustration works, I’ve been teaching drawing for almost two months already. Honestly it’s my first try to teach a private drawing class, but it turns out to be really good. My student enjoys the class all the time and keeps improving. I also learned to keep the task interesting while challenging. I’m expecting my second kid so for right now I have no plan to take more students, but I’m seriously considering that maybe during fall I’ll open my drawing studio for beginner art lovers. It’s so enjoyable to share tips of doing arts with young art lovers and help them do better and enjoy more.

A Colorful Little Town

page1-2

Recently I’m working on a new picture book. It’s really fun to draw the setting of a colorful little town. I’ve drawn and painted this kind of small town several times before but every time I had some new ideas and inspirations to explore the style a little bit. This time I’ve tried to make the characters more appealing to beginner readers (the target audience of this picture book) and the overall color tone bright and cheerful.

Storytime!

Earlier this month I had the privilege of being a reader for a group of youngsters. I got to read one of my favorite books, It’s Time To Eat (Chinese Edition), and talk to the kids about being an author.  The energetic kindergartners made me feel very welcome and I really enjoyed spending some time with them.  We explored the adventures together with Marcus the Monkey and his friends, and discussed different kinds of food for different animals.

Books have the power to benefit toddlers and preschoolers in a myriad of ways. As a parent, reading to your child is one of the most important things you can do to prepare him with a foundation for academic excellence. Read aloud to your kids, start early and stay with it!
